GANG Awards – Best Sound Design In A Casual / Social Game!

Fantastic news from the GANG Awards last night – Hornet Sound’s sound design for The Chinese Room’s “So Let Us Melt” was awarded Best Sound Design In A Casual / Social Game! Composer Jessica Curry also picked up Best Music In A Casual / Social Game and Best Music For An Indie Game. Congrats Jess and the Chinese Room team, and woohoo!

2017 Roundup

It’s been a super busy year for Hornet Sound, with 3 new VR projects, ongoing work on Fractured Space, sound design for a theme park ride and work on a yet-to-be-announced console indie title.

Shooty Fruity

Released just yesterday, Shooty Fruity is a great VR shooter that pits you against waves of mutant fruit as you work the checkouts in Super Mega Mart. It’s colourful and chaotic and awesome fun. Developed by my good friends at Near Light and published by ndreams (PSVR / Oculus / Vive).

Chainsmokers Paris VR

This was a really fun project to work on – a VR experience built around a song by electronic duo Chainsmokers for PSVR. The player remixes and augments the song while moving through, and manipulating, dreamlike environments, everything synchronised and mapped to the harmony of the song. It recently earned a Raindance award for best branded VR experience. Developed by Curve Digital in partnership with Sony Music.

So Let Us Melt

Earlier in the year I teamed up with The Chinese Room to work on their Google Daydream VR experience So Let Us Melt. It was an ambitious and challenging project for such a relatively low powered platform, and the result is a unique science fiction fairytale, scored by BAFTA winning composer Jessica Curry. Developed by The Chinese Room and published by Google.

Gruffalo River Ride Adventure

I created the audio for this new ride at Chessington World Of Adventures which opened in the spring. Ride created by Seeper for Merlin Entertainment.

Fractured Space

Last but by no means least, I’ve continued to work on Fractured Space, Edgecase Games’ capital-ships-in-space epic, with updates released throughout the year, the most recent released within the last few hours! There’s plenty more to come from Fractured Space in 2018.

Latest Game Projects

I haven’t been very good at updating this page recently, mainly because I’ve been working super hard on lots of exciting projects! So, here’s a quick roundup of my latest game projects.

In Autumn 2016 I contributed sound design for creatures, towers and heroes to Castle Creeps Tower Defence (Android, Outplay Entertainment).

My first VR project, VR Perfect (PSVR/Vive/Oculus, nDreams) released just before Christmas 2016 – a relaxation-oriented VR experience in 3 beautiful natural environments, so it involved lots of fun foley work recording foliage, sand, water and so on. I provided all of the sound design and audio programming.

Most recently I’ve produced the audio for electro pop superstars Chainsmokers’ VR experience based around their latest single “Paris” (PSVR, Curve Digital / Sony Music). Paris VR was showcased at this years South By Southwest and is released as a PSVR exclusive in the next few weeks. Gruffalo River Ride Adventure

I teamed up with visual arts agency Seeper again recently to produce the audio for Chessington World Of Adventures’ latest attraction – the Gruffalo River Ride Adventure. Seeper’s visuals are stunning and it was a fascinating project. The ride opened in March 2017 and from what I’ve seen the kids are loving it!

The One, The Few, The Many

Tonight and tomorrow night (30th/31st October 2015) at Lincoln Castle, the brilliant people at London art/technology studio seeper will be treating the crowds to a stunning projection, light and laser show, the finale of the Frequency 2015 digital arts festival. The show explores the impact of the Magna Carta (800 years old this year) in establishing rights and freedoms in Britain and further afield.

Seeper approached me to create the soundtrack to the show and it has been a truly unique project. Part animation soundtrack – a rollercoaster journey of images, sounds and music projected using seeper’s 3D projection mapping technology onto the castle’s ancient Lucy Tower. Part interactive audio installation – visitors can interact with zones in the castle grounds representing The One (the King, absolute power), The Few (the powerful elite), The Many (the rest of us, the 99%!), generating awesome laser and audio effects, even interactively performing parts of the soundtrack to the show. And a VR experience too!

It’s been a pleasure to work with such fantastic creative talent and such a special brief. Now let’s hope the weather holds up and the crowd enjoys the show!

Miracle Of Singapore

Recently I produced the music and sound design for a 3D projection-mapping installation called Miracle Of Singapore, part of the Images Of Singapore Live visitor attraction in Sentosa Island, Singapore, produced by London-based creative agency Seeper. The video below shows some of what is projection-mapped onto the walls and pillars of a custom built space – hence the unusual proportions. It’s not possible to show it in full in simple old fashioned video unfortunately! The audio on-site is mixed in 7.1 surround, however the centre channel is kept free for a live narration. The piece ends with a loop and fade as the audience is led out of the space.
